Sabbath Rest {Productivity Challenge}

It does seem counterproductive to talk about rest when we’re trying to increase our productivity. But taking Sabbath rest seriously is part of acknowledging that we are limited creatures, made to need rest. And when we have regular periods of rest, we tend to see increased productivity!

It seems ironic to talk about rest when we're trying to increase our productivity. When we have regular periods of sabbath rest, we are more productive!

This post is Day #25 of our 25-Day Productivity Challenge! You can find the entire round-up HERE. Make sure you pin this post so you can find it later and don’t forget to take action!

It’s How We’re Made

Even while we can work to increase our productivity, there’s no way to be productive 24/7. We’re just not made for it.

When God rested after creating the world as told in the book of Genesis, he did so as a pattern for his creation. He made us to work while we work, and then to take rest in regular intervals.

Did you know that during the French Revolution, France experimented with a ten day week? So, instead of one day of rest per week (7 days), they tried to prolong the productivity by giving one day of rest per 10 days. But the new plan didn’t last long, as the laborers couldn’t continue with less regular days of rest.

What does it mean for you?

I know I’ve tried to work almost non-stop in seasons where I’ve been trying to get a project done or get a big goal finished. But as a regular habit, it’s so important to rest regularly.

While it personally means that I will devote Sundays to worshiping with my church family, it might also include things like:

  • turning off the tech or social media one day per week
  • getting off of Facebook or Instagram
  • not working on your business one day out of seven
  • claiming the evenings as family time

How does it look for you? If you’re frequently burned out or not able to follow through with your goals, is it because you’re short changing yourself and the rest you need?

Taking a day of Sabbath Rest is so restorative! In our quest for increased productivity, let’s enjoy the regular periods of rest.
