The Disciples, the Cross, and the Resurrection: How to teach these topics to 7-12 year olds

Today on the Homeschool with Moxie Podcast, we’re thrilled to welcome Danika Cooley—award-winning author, former homeschooling mom, and the creator behind Bible Road Trip, a popular curriculum that helps families read through the entire Bible in three years. Danika has a passion for making big theological truths accessible and engaging for kids of all ages. She’s the author of numerous books and resources designed to help parents disciple their children with confidence and joy.

Her latest project is a new series of children’s books answering some of the biggest questions in the Christian faith: Who were the disciples? What was the Cross? Why did the Resurrection happen?

If you’ve ever wondered how to explain these profound truths to your kids in a way that’s both simple and deeply meaningful, you’re in for a treat. We’re chatting with Danika about how to disciple our kids, make theology accessible for young hearts, and spark a love for God’s Word in our homes.

Here's how to teach your 7-12 year olds about the disciples, the Cross, and the Resurrection. Here's Danika Cooley of the Who What Why Series.

My posts include affiliate links.

Here’s how you can teach your 7-12 year olds about these foundational aspects of the Christian faith. Danika walks us through these topics. Plus, enjoy a flip-through of the books!

And you can enter to win your own copies of the Who What Why Resurrection Series by July 30th, 2025. I’ll mail the winner my copies of these new books! See below for details to enter the giveaway. (U.S. mailing addresses only, please).

HWM 316. The Disciples, the Cross, and the Resurrection: A look at three aspects of Jesus’ life and work for 7-12 year olds

In episode 316 of the Homeschool with Moxie Podcast, I chat with Danika Cooley— former homeschool mom, author, and creator of the Who What Why series for kids. We talk about what inspired her to write this theologically rich and engaging series and why she believes kids are more than capable of handling big truths about God. Danika shares what’s new in the latest set of books and why she focused this time on the disciples, the Cross, and the Resurrection.

We dive into how she strikes that balance between being biblically deep without overwhelming kids, and why it’s so important not to talk down to children when we’re teaching them theology. She also offers insight into how she chooses which concepts are “big enough” for young minds and hearts to grasp.

About the Who What Why Resurrection Books

In our discussion about Who Were the Disciples, Danika explains how learning about the lives of the twelve disciples helps kids better understand who Jesus is and what it means to follow Him. She even shares which disciple became her personal favorite during the writing process!

When we move to What Was the Cross, Danika talks through how she walks kids from the Garden of Eden all the way to the Cross, helping them understand sin, justice, and grace using simple, vivid illustrations—like standing trial in God’s courtroom.

In Why Did the Resurrection Happen?, we explore how Danika helps kids think through what the Resurrection really means—not just for Jesus, but for all believers. We also talk about the “already-and-not-yet” kingdom and how to explain that to children in a way that makes sense.

Listen to our chat with author Danika Cooley

This episode is packed with encouragement for homeschool parents—whether you’re using these books in your daily routine, family devotions, or just looking for trustworthy, gospel-centered resources. Danika also shares practical tips for adapting the books for different ages, and encouragement for parents who feel a little unsure about teaching theology at home.

If you’ve ever wondered how to make deep biblical truths come alive for your kids, this conversation is for you.
