Reading Eggs REVIEW

My 6-year-old was excited to use 240 Essential Reading Skills for First Grade, one of the workbooks from Reading Eggs. She did complete kindergarten and when we tried this program, we hadn’t officially started first grade yet. So it was a great chance to see how Reading Eggs might work for us.

Get an inside peek into how we used Reading Eggs for 1st grade homeschool phonics instruction.

About Reading Eggs

Reading Eggs is a complete grade-level program with lessons that cover the skills needed in:

  • phonological & phonemic awareness
  • phonics
  • vocabulary
  • fluency
  • comprehension

We received 240 Essential Reading Skills for First Grade, which is a softcover workbook with 270 pages. The program is very colorful, with well-designed lesson pages that include fun illustrations and easy-to-read fonts.

We also received a trial subscription to the online Reading Eggs program, where kids play games, complete activities, and watch animated lessons related to the lessons in the workbook.

The publishers recommend using the program like this:

  • complete the online lesson first
  • work through the workbook pages
  • each lesson has 4 pages in the workbook
  • take the quiz that appears after every 5 lessons

How We Used It

We started at the beginning of the book, but my daughter was flying through. It seemed too easy for her.

So, I finally realized that there was a placement test online to see where your student should be placed within the Reading Eggs program.

The placement test showed that she could start in the last section of the book. However, I did want her to have a bit of review, so we backed up a bit more and started again in the middle of the book.

She loves the variety of activities and the colorful pages.

The book includes a good bit of repetition of new phonemes.

Since we were given a free trial of the online program, my daughter did explore a bit of the Reading Eggs site.

She thoroughly enjoyed it! However, since I’m not excited about adding more online time to her school day, we’ll just stick with the student book for the rest of the year.

After she completed the placement test and we knew where she needed placed, the activities were more challenging and on-level for her. She liked the spelling games the best.

I appreciate the short tasks in the workbook. We can do as much or as little as we want each day.

There are 4 total pages of work related to each lesson and new concept.

240 Essential Reading Skills for First Grade from Reading Eggs is a great sequential program for taking your first grader into more confident reading ability. It’s easy to use and doesn’t require a teacher’s manual or extra resources.

Check out the special 4-week trial to see if this program would be a good fit for your family.
