Modern Miss Mason

Leah Boden’s book, Modern Miss Mason, brings Charlotte Mason’s educational ideas into the 21st century. This is a newer book (2022) and is full of practical strategies and mindset shifts for homeschooling parents at any stage. But this book would be especially helpful for newer homeschooling families who are just starting to develop their own rhythm while building their philosophy of home education.

The book is divided into three main parts, each focusing on one mindset shift:

  • Reframing Childhood
  • Reframing Education
  • Reframing Motherhood

While this book is geared toward a family who intends to use Charlotte Mason ideas, I think you could still walk away with plenty of inspiration and encouragement, even if you’re not a Charlotte Mason “purist.”

Of course, in any book related to Charlotte Mason’s philosophies, you’d expect to learn about narration, living books, and nature study. And this book has all those topics plus more!

But you might not realize that you need to reframe childhood itself or your role as a mother. This book will give you fresh encouragement in those topics too.

Ainsley Arment of The Call of the Wild + Free wrote the foreword. You’ll want to go back to episode 86 of the Homeschool with Moxie Podcast where we had her as a guest to catch that chat if you haven’t already.

What are you doing well? – podcast episode 255

It’s easy to focus on the hardest parts of your homeschool day and be burdened down by it. But what if you could flip the script? Listen in and be encouraged! This is episode 255 of the Homeschool with Moxie Podcast.

In this episode, we talk about:

  • why comparison with other homeschool families isn’t good
  • the difference between introspection and being overly self-critical
  • how focusing on the challenging parts of our homeschool day is causing discouragement
  • how to flip the script and gain confidence
  • the main question you should be asking

It’s easy to focus on the hardest parts of your homeschool day and be burdened down by them. But, as Leah Boden says, “every mother is calling out for confidence.”

So instead of focusing on only the hard parts, ask yourself: “What am I doing well?” and double down on THAT.

  • Are you good at reading aloud to your kids?
  • Do you get daily walks?
  • Are you finding the best places to buy books for your homeschool library?
  • Are your kids amazed when you share family history and family stories?
  • Are you doing well with teaching them life skills?

On Reframing Childhood, Education, and Motherhood – 3 tips from Modern Miss Mason (episode 256)

Here are 3 more tips from Leah Boden in her book, Modern Miss Mason. When homeschooling, it becomes necessary to have some mindset shifts in the areas of childhood, education, and motherhood. Here’s what that looks like.

This is episode 256 of the Homeschool with Moxie Podcast.

Methodology Reflects Ideology – episode 257

Leah Boden says in Modern Miss Mason that “our methodology is always a reflection of our ideology.” How does that look practically in our homeschools and what should we do about it?

  • What do we need to know about inputs and outputs?
  • Learn about the modern education system – The Underground History of American Education by John Taylor Gatto
  • Babysitter society & standardized plan
  • Let’s discuss low expectations.
  • Contrast the educations of the working poor and the children from wealthy families during the time of Miss Mason and beyond.
  • What do we really believe about the nature of children? THIS will inform your methods.

Suggestions from Leah Boden in Modern Miss Mason (page 32):

  • Consider your children before you consider your curriculum.
  • Remember, one rule doesn’t fit all. Consider this when making decisions about varying aspects of your children’s lives.
  • As your children get into their teen years and express ideas around future careers or pathways, begin to orientate parts of their learning focus to specialize in subjects relevant for their journey.

Repetition & Rhythm in Homeschool – episode 272

Are you worried about creating the perfect educational environment for your kids? Leah Boden says that “fashioning a beautiful homeschool set-up is not the same as creating an atmosphere.” Learn how to create repetition & rhythm in your homeschool for more joy and less chaos.

Listen to episode 272 of the Homeschool with Moxie Podcast:

Helicopter Homeschooling – episode 273

Are you a helicopter parent? Are you helicopter homeschooling? Break free from the anxiety and overwork and lean into some Masterly inactivity inspired by Charlotte Mason.

Inspired by chapter 4 of Modern Miss Mason by Leah Boden, here’s episode 273: Helicopter Homeschooling.
