Here’s the truth: most conventional planners just don’t work for the life of a homeschool mom. Even planners designed by other homeschool moms. Because you might not have the same homeschool style and planning style as that other mom!
Plus, no one’s life looks exactly the same as another person. In addition to homeschooling, you might work, or volunteer, or read, or hike, or menu plan – or none of those things!
You are unique and need a planner that will be as flexible as can be.

What’s a Bullet Journal?
It’s a mix of calendar, planning pages, brainstorming pages, lists, dreams & long-term goals, and important information.
Bullet journaling is a lot like homeschooling:
- DIY
- flexible
- customizable
- no fitting a square peg in a round hole!
Yesterday’s post talked about batching, and what better place to keep track of your tasks and how you need to batch them than a bullet journal!
What you need to know about bullet journaling is that there is no right way to do it. It will be as individual and unique as you are.
How do you use a bullet journal?
If you are one of those people that has multiple journals and planners and multiple calendars, then throw them all away and put your whole life – homeschooling, work, meal planning, house notes, brainstorming – into one bullet journal.
That being said, here are some things to consider keeping in your BJ:
- monthly calendars
- homeschool year plans
- curriculum lists
- books to read
- books you have read
- Christmas or birthday lists
- brainstorming lists
- home projects to get to
- bucket lists
- field trip ideas
- places to visit as a family
- meal plans
- budget items
- verses to memorize
- favorite quotes
- habit tracker
- homeschool student notes
- volunteer activity notes & information
Bullet journals work well because they are blank journals that you make into a planner that fits your needs.
So, yes, you will draw in your calendars, your lists, and your charts.
If you’re not artsy, don’t fear! I’m very utilitarian, and other than a few new colored pens and a beautiful journal, I’m not fancy when it comes to my bullet journal.
In fact, I’m a little nervous to show you the inside of my journal, because it’s nothing special.
You can get all detailed and artistic as you want. Or keep it to the point and minimal. Do whatever fits your style.
Because that’s the way that you’ll keep using this bullet journal – if it conforms well to your methods and needs. If you’re trying to fit someone else’s style, it might flop for you!
