A Peek Inside BJU Press Kindergarten Math Worktext

When you’re homeschooling a kindergartener, you could go in one hundred different directions and styles of schooling.  However, most would agree that a great foundation in two areas is essential:  phonics & math.  But you probably also have high expectations of kindergarten curriculum, right?  It can’t be boring, it has to be open & go, and it needs to be reasonably priced.  I have a recommendation for you.  Our family has used BJU Press math products from the kindergarten level all the way through high school and it’s still our favorite!  Here’s a peek inside BJU Press Kindergarten Math worktext.

This is our fifth time using BJU Press math curriculum for kindergarten. If you'd like a peek inside the student worktext, then this post is for you!

If you’re interested in a more thorough review of BJU Press Math curriculum at all grade levels, you can find my review HERE.

Additionally, it really is important to get a realistic grasp on what homeschooling can and can’t accomplish.  Your kids won’t master everything.  That’s just not reasonable.  Find some encouragement in these posts about the main foundational areas, which does include math.

Did you just pull your kids out of school and find yourself suddenly a homeschooling parent? What should you do first? Here are the only two things you need to start homeschooling tomorrow. @4onemore.com

Okay, are you ready for a peek inside the worktext?  I know it can be hard to purchase curriculum sight unseen, so pretend you’re at a homeschooling convention booth and you’re able to page through the book. (Don’t miss the video at the end of this post!)

For my kindergarteners, I only purchase the student worktext, which sells for $27.50  on BJUPresshomeschool.com.  The website is showing the 3rd edition while my review video below shows the 4th edition.

They do sell additional products, but since homeschooling uses a one-on-one approach, and this is kindergarten math, I know that the teacher’s edition is not necessary.

When I was newly homeschooling my first kindergartener years ago, I did purchase the manipulative packet, but my older-homeschool-mom wisdom now tells me that I could have easily found items around the house to use instead.  For example, why use punch-outs of pennies and nickels to learn counting money when I could just use the real thing?  And you could use almost anything for counting or sequencing manipulatives – from candy to buttons to Iwako erasers!

We don’t do exactly one page per day in kindergarten.  Instead, we work when we’re in the mood.  That means some days we do an entire chapter!  Other days, we’re too busy being a five year old to care about math instruction.  That’s okay.  The pages include just enough practice and instruction to learn the concept.  You can always add your own activities around the house.

Homeschool Planet offers made-for-you lesson plans for all the BJU Press math curriculum.

What we love about BJU Kindergarten Worktext:

  • Colorful & interesting rather than black & white and boring
  • Spiral and mastery learning
  • Appropriate amounts of writing for kindergarten (not too much!)
  • Explains concepts (like groups of 10) rather than just requiring memorization of facts
  • Inexpensive
  • Gives the homeschool parent confidence that there won’t be any “gaps” in their math instruction

Here’s the inside peek.  Please do let me know if you have any questions! And check out all the great resources from BJU Press Homeschool.
