What’s a Hot Spot

A hot spot is just a place in your home that easily becomes cluttered. It might be the kitchen counter where everyone sets their things. It could be at the foot of your bed. Maybe it’s the junk drawer or the pantry.

We all have dozens of hot spots in our home, but if you can learn to tackle them one at a time, you’ll be well on your way to having a home that feels more decluttered, even if it’s not!

How to Declutter Quickly

The key to dealing with a hot spot is to declutter quickly. Try not to spend all day dealing with one area. And it’s okay to start small – the spice drawer, the junk drawer, the medicine cabinet, or the coat closet.

Here’s one more caveat before we get to it: decluttering has to come before organizing, and they are not the same thing!

Many people “organize” a space by moving things around, buying new baskets or organization systems, but not really dealing with the root issue – too much stuff.

If you learn to declutter a space first, the organization is so simple! And many times, you don’t need to spend good money on new containers. Rather, you just need less stuff.

Also, we’re not looking for Pinterest-perfect solutions here. You can pretty up the space later.

So, here’s your action steps for today:

  • choose one hot spot to declutter
  • pull everything out of the space, drawer, closet
  • separate into 4 bins – trash, donate, keep here, needs to go somewhere else in the house
  • be ruthless! “If I was to move tomorrow, would I keep this?”
  • get rid of the trash and donate pile quickly
  • put the “needs to go somewhere else in the house” in its new home
  • put the “keep here” pile back into the space in an organized way

Once you have success with one decluttering one hot spot, you might be more motivated to tackle more!

Go with your seasonal energy and do as many hot spots this week as you can.

I have a Declutter Cheatsheet for Teens that you can grab for FREE – and it will work for adults too 🙂
