Homeschool parents, AI isn’t going anywhere, so let’s talk about how to use it on your terms. In this episode, we cover practical ways to use AI for lesson planning and differentiation, a clear framework for guiding your kids’ use, and simple steps to get started this week. This is the episode that takes you from overwhelmed by technology to confidently in control of it.

AI Is Already in Your Homeschool
Let me paint a picture.
Your kid asks you a question you don’t know the answer to. You tell them to look it up. And instead of heading to the bookshelf, they open ChatGPT and have a full answer in fifteen seconds.
Part of you is impressed. Part of you panics a little.
Here’s the truth: AI is already in your homeschool whether you invited it or not. The only question is whether you are the one deciding how it shows up.
That’s exactly what we’re digging into in this episode.

You Don’t Have to Be a Tech Expert
One of the biggest fears I hear from homeschool parents is “I don’t understand it well enough to teach it.”
But here’s the thing — you don’t need to understand how the engine works to drive the car. You just need to know the rules of the road.
AI doesn’t have to be complicated. And it doesn’t have to be scary. What it needs to be is intentional — and intentionality is something you already practice every single day as a homeschool parent.
Start With Yourself First
Before we even talk about your kids using AI, let’s talk about you using it.
The biggest shift I want you to make is this: AI is a tool for the teacher first, and the student second.
When you use it for lesson planning, you can build an entire unit study in minutes — tailored to your child’s age, learning style, and interests. If you have kids at different levels, AI can take the same concept and explain it two different ways without any extra work on your end.
It’s also a great research companion when your child goes deep on a topic you don’t know well. You become the guide, and AI becomes the encyclopedia that talks back.
And for discussion questions? Paste in a chapter from whatever you’re reading and ask for five questions to talk through together. Charlotte Mason moms, this one is for you.
What About Your Kids Using It?
This is where it gets a little more nuanced — and honestly, it depends on your child’s age and maturity.
The simple way to think about it: there’s a difference between using AI to help you think and using AI to do your thinking for you.
Brainstorming ideas, getting feedback on something they’ve already written, or asking it to explain a concept in a different way — that’s using AI as a tool. That’s great.
Having it write their essay, solve their math problems, or answer questions they haven’t wrestled with yet — that’s where learning gets stolen.
The conversation to have with your kids is simple: AI is a tutor, not a ghostwriter. You still have to do the thinking. It just helps you do it better.
This is actually a rich character conversation hiding inside a tech conversation — and you’re the perfect person to lead it.
3 Things to Do This Week
You don’t need a whole plan. You just need a first step.
Try one AI-assisted lesson plan this week. Pick any subject, open ChatGPT or Claude, and type: “Help me plan one week of (subject) lessons for a (age) year old who (something specific about your child).” See what comes back. You don’t have to use it all.
Have a curious conversation with your kid. Ask them if they’ve ever used AI for anything and what they thought. Listen more than you talk. Find out where they already are.
Set one family guideline together. Just one. Something simple like: “We don’t use AI to write things we’re supposed to write ourselves.” Write it down somewhere you’ll all see it.
You’re Already Doing the Hard Part
You chose homeschool because you wanted to be intentional about your child’s education.
AI is just the newest thing that requires that same intentionality. The families who will thrive in an AI world aren’t the ones who banned it or handed it over without thought — they’re the ones who learned to use it wisely.
And that’s exactly what you’re doing.
