Heya.
In order to have a choice I look at questions on exam papers and adapt ones I find in commercially produced workbooks at the local bookstore too. I also read up on subject requirements and levels of our national curriculum. That information helps me decide what to do next. I’m a keen believer in quality over quantity here all the way. Best wishes. Nice to meet you. I do like to have a flexible lesson plan to use however. It eases my stress.

I focus on teaching skills through play as much as possible. We do a ton of play dates at the closest library where they have a soft play area and so on. I also rarely give out homework each term. I believe education should be truly meaningful and fun at the same time. In lieu of daily homework tasks I only set the children a fun homework exercise each fortnight. The homework questions vary. For example the homework might be to plan a Halloween party or to decide a Christmas menu in question. Or the homework may be to study a artist and make some brief summary notes on findings.

At other times the homework is to read a new story and think of ten original math questions. Homework really needs to be fun. And it can be. Recently we visited a new museum and had lunch by a river. Their homework task that week was to write a recount of their trip to that museum. I also told them to find out a bit more about the town online. We drew a map. My kids love homework.

As a momma to 13 and on my last "student" at home, thank you for this refresh. I listen to your podcast each morning as I walk and say, "Yes! I wish everyone could understand. " We're kindred spirits. Starting off on this journey in 1986/7 helped as we weren't able to get any curriculum! The "big guys" would only sell to schools with a letter head and we would have had to gone to a printer for that! No computers, no Pinterest bloggers, just me and the Holy Spirit! KONOS a few years later taught me how to relax and enjoy my growing brood of children.

I came on here today to find "show notes", hoping to inspire my pile of project notecards. I get the usual lapbook, brochure, PowerPoint presentation, but I was hoping for more ideas...more modern (that's where I find you help me most). We're using Trello and loving it!

Keep up the good work.
Abundant blessings,
Val Colvin

I've never thought to use Trello for organizing my digital homeschool resources. I currently store them in folders on my desktop, sorted by subject/grade. I'm not sure that I use enough digital resources to make this system necessary/helpful, but your post made me wonder how many good resources I might be missing out on. It's definitely something to consider.

Thanks for sharing your experience! Yes, I've since learned that there are specialized fonts for children with dyslexia, so that definitely could be a help for some kids. TG&TB wasn't around back when we were trying things, so it's good to hear of another possible option for families. Again - thanks for the helpful comment!

Been homeschooling multiple dyslexic kids for years. One did well with Barton for reading and spelling. With another child we tried All About Reading and found that he'd get headaches with it. It was a slow and painful go for him. Must be the font or something that was hard on his brain (I have no doubt it works well for many kids) We then tried the new Good and the Beautiful LA curriculm and he's taking off with reading (FREE download of entire curriculm so only cost to try it is the lessons you print). Point of the story if one thing fails try, try again until you find what works! It's an adventure and no two kids are the same!
