HWM 298. Homeschooling with ChatGPT

Have you ever wondered if you should use ChatGPT in your homeschooling? And if so, how can you use it to take some tasks off your plate or make homeschooling easier?

I asked ChatGPT how it could help homeschool moms, and this is what it said:

“I can help homeschool moms in many ways, including:

Curriculum Planning & Lesson Ideas

  • Suggesting structured homeschool curricula for different subjects and grade levels.
  • Creating custom lesson plans tailored to your child’s learning style.
  • Providing thematic unit studies for hands-on, interdisciplinary learning.

Educational Resources & Activities

  • Recommending books, websites, and apps for specific subjects.
  • Providing printable worksheets, quizzes, and activities.
  • Offering STEM project ideas, history timelines, and writing prompts.

Time Management & Organization

  • Helping create daily and weekly homeschool schedules.
  • Suggesting ways to balance multiple kids and age levels.
  • Offering record-keeping tips for transcripts and portfolios.

Teaching Strategies & Child Development

  • Sharing differentiated instruction techniques for kids with different learning styles.
  • Helping with special needs accommodations for neurodiverse learners.
  • Giving tips on fostering independence and critical thinking.

Encouragement & Support

  • Providing motivation on tough homeschooling days.
  • Sharing self-care strategies for moms.
  • Suggesting homeschool communities and co-op groups.

Would you like help with a specific topic, like a lesson plan or curriculum recommendations? 😊”

HWM 46: Using Technology in Your Homeschool

This episode is an interview I had with Dr. Monica Burns of the Easy EdTech Podcast. She’s an expert in the field of leveraging technology as a learning tool, and I was excited to hear her ideas of how we can bring the right balance of technology into our homeschools.

Monica has written several books on the topic:

Key Ideas with Technology Use:

  • increasing access (think: virtual field trips, show what they know in a digital format, prepares them for the future)
  • content consumption: active vs. passive, consumption vs. creation
  • focus on incorporating just a few ideas at a time
  • look for open-ended creation tools (tools with more than just one way to use them) like Adobe Express
  • high level consumption of tech (example: Khan Academy tutorials)
  • high level creation idea (example: create a digital portfolio of your best work)
  • use joint media engagement for your youngest learners
  • take informal inventory of your technology use and see where you need more balance
  • creative idea to try: trade book trailers you make with another homeschool family!
  • check out resources from Microsoft Education to help your dyslexic or other learning challenged students
  • pass-back technology illustration: establishing the norms and expectations for your family usage
