Here’s a fun craft that is great for many reasons:
- costs just pennies
- easy enough for the kids to make
- can be made in large quantities
- customizable
- easy to find supplies
I have been making these mini notebooks for several years now and my kids love to receive ones that I have tailored to their personalities.

Supplies
Here’s what you need:
- mini composition notebooks :: I usually find them at my dollar store or Walmart in packs of three
- paper for the covers :: scrapbook paper, children’s book pages from thrifted books, printed music, recycled calendar pages
- Mod Podge
- foam brush
- wax paper
Instructions
STEP 1: Make a template for your covers
Using a piece of card stock or cereal box, create a cutting template that is just a little larger than the shape of the cover.
STEP 2: Cut a front and back from your choice of paper
Children’s book pages look so fun on these mini notebooks!
I have also used old printed music, pages from books with just text, or scrapbook paper. You could use old maps, recycled calendar pages, or old letters. Tailor it to your gift recipient and have fun.
STEP 3: Add your patterned paper to the front cover
Using your foam brush, paint a thin layer of Mod Podge to the front cover, making sure to go all the way past the edges. However, if you use too much, the paper you are putting on the cover will become bubbly. So, keep it thin. Making sure to line up the left edge of your paper with the black edge of the notebook binding, add your paper to the cover. Smooth out any bubbles or wrinkles as you go. Hopefully you cut the paper just a little larger than needed, so your paper will hang over the edges.
STEP 4: Repeat step 3 for the back cover
STEP 5: Trim your edges
Now that the paper is adhered to the front and back covers and has had some time to dry, open the cover so you see the inside of the front and back and carefully trim the excess paper.
STEP 6: Mod Podge over the cover
Your notebook should be trimmed and covered. All that’s left now is to add a protective coating to the top to give it some shine. Paint a thin layer of Mod Podge over the front cover, making sure to go all the way to the edges. It will dry clear. Leave it to dry for a few minutes.
When the front is dry, do the same for the back. When both sides are dry to the touch, cover in wax paper and layer some heavy books on top for a few hours. I find that this helps to prevent bubbling.
STEP 7: Add decorative piece to front cover (optional)
I love this option to inject an unexpected element to the cover. You could cut some felt circles and glue them on the cover with a button in the middle as a fiber arts flower. A few simple buttons are fun too. Washi tape is always a great addition. Vintage brooches or pins from the thrift store can add bling.
These make cute gifts for kids’ friends, teachers, students, and even adults! I use one in my purse as my ongoing Christmas shopping list.
